As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
